Kenning is used in poetry to create different effects, They can be combined to make a poem called a Kennings in which a collection of kenning lines are combined to describe an object.
This is a great exercise for analysing different forms of poetry.
In the short animated film a friendly hamster reads out David Horner’s poem - ‘I Am Hamster’
The powerpoint presentation can be used in the classroom to show how the children can create kennings and then make them into poems.
The teachers’ notes give some interesting background information about the origins of kennings. Then there are further suggestions for developing the work started in the powerpoint presentation.
All the materials are fully adaptable, so you can make them your own if you wish.

This Father’s Day poetry idea is developed from playing a simple word association game.
In this PowerPoint presentation, the well known children’s poet, David Horner, will talk the children through a clever way to write a poem for their dad for Father’s Day.
The new words they come up with in the word association game will be used to create four line verses, each ending with the same refrain.

In this resource package David Horner, children’s poet in residence here at Goodeyedeers, shares with you a typical session he did when he was working in schools across the country and abroad.
A comprehensive set of notes set out in detail how David would have organised a typical visit to school. The package also includes all the resources you will need to duplicate the sessions:

In this PowerPoint the Christmas story is narrated by four cats who were there.

Oscar - Mary’s cat who was with her when the Angel Gabriel appeared.

These 30 black and white, growth mindset banner pennants are fun and need no-prep. Set 1 and set 2 have different shaped pennants and different growth mindset quotes, giving a total of 30 growth mindset quotes in all.
You can mix and match between the two sets.
Laminate and staple to a ribbon to display in your classroom, on a display board or in the corridor.

There are guidelines on how the envelopes should be cut out and assembled. There are six differently patterned envelope nets to choose from.

Show your children how to write some fantastic Christmas Haiku poems.
Ideal for children in KS2 .
The PowerPoint lesson takes you through the process. It starts by explaining what a Haiku poem is and then has the children recognising and counting syllables.
They then have a chance to complete some half-finished Haiku. This can be done as a whole class, in pairs or groups or individually.
Finally, the children are given some picture prompts to help get them started on writing their own magical Christmas Haiku.
The Teachers’ Notes are written in the form of a script explaining what is contained in each slide of the PowerPoint and giving suggestions for you to explore with the children.
